Shawn Hudson Interview

Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start writing.

I started writing because I was tired of the books that my high school was giving us to read because I couldn’t relate to them. I’m a young black kid from the projects I can’t relate to Harry Potter or this other fantasy bullshit they were trying to feed us. I love urban fiction but I got tired of every story being about kingpins and their glory days, so I decided to pick up the pen and the rest was history.

Describe your writing process? Is there anything unique about it?
I usually write a concept down and then I listen to various instrumentals while writing. It helps set the tone for what may happen in a chapter or throughout the course of the story. I’m also very secretive I don’t tell my family or friends what I’m working on until it’s almost done.

Have you published any books or do you have a desire to do so?
My books are usually about the inner city black American experience but I try to tell it from a different perspective instead of Qatarfollowing the stereotypical cookie cutter format. I always aim to write stories that identify a problem but come up with a solution but also incorporate current events into the mix as well.

Do you have any favorite poets or authors?
Silk White and K’wan. Other than that I just have favorite books by various authors.

Do you have a favorite book of poetry or poems?
Hoodlum 1 & 2-K’wan, Drug Dealer-Isadore Johnson, The Outsiders-S.E. Hinton and Tears of a hustler series-Silk White

What are you reading now?
Nothing at the moment but for 2018 I will definitely get back into reading I just didn’t want to be influenced by anyone else’s work while writing my own.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Full-time job, pets, hobbies?
I love listening to music primarily hip-hop, R&B, Jazz, and instrumentals. I also work as a bike courier as well.

Are you working on a current project?I’m working on my next poetry collection “Death Of A Stereotype” and after that, I’m going back to writing novels. I’m currently working on one that is going to definitely be different from what I normally write about. That one I’m gonna drop after DOAS though.
