Tara Kruyt Interview

Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start writing.

My earliest memories all have to do with books or reading or telling stories, so I think I was born inclined to explore literature.

Describe your writing process? Is there anything unique about it?
I write at the most random times. I carry one specific notebook with me 24/7; ask me anytime where it is & it will be in arms’ reach, because I get random ideas at the most random times and I have to write it down by hand. It’s not the same at typing it on my phone or something, it has to be hand written in THAT notebook, even though it’s so worn out at this point.

Have you published any books or do you have a desire to do so?
My first published book as of this month is a poetry book I started writing last year. I had a roller coaster of a year full of emotion and whenever I needed to express those feelings I wrote them all down in kind of a chaotic scribble of words. It’s funny, because something just happened to rhyme and then I got the inspiration to turn it into poetry.

Do you have any favorite poets or authors?
I love Shakespeare. I read Shakespeare so often, especially when I need a burst of creativity or inspiration. (not that I write in Shakespeare style or anything, he just gets my brain gears turning.) If you look at all my Shakespeare books I make notes on every page and circle things I like and translate it…fully aware of how nerdy that makes me sound. I love it.

Do you have a favorite book of poetry or poems?
My favourite book changes every week. I’ll read anything I can get my hands on so it really depends. I like all literature.

What are you reading now?
When I say I’ll read anything, I genuinely mean anything I can get my hands on. I read a biology textbook the other day because it was the closest thing to me. I read the Four Agreements recently though, and that book also really inspired me to choose my words more carefully & intently and I think that’s important as a writer.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Full-time job, pets, hobbies?
Whatever I feel like. Everything is my hobby.

Are you working on a current project?
I am almost finished my second project actually which I hope to release in the next few months. I don’t really know what genre I’d classify it as to be completely honest but I would say self-help/autobiography/comedy??? Stay tuned.
