muses is a descriptive and autobiographical account of different parts of my life that have resulted in lasting impressions and provided endless inspirations. The story starts in the season of “fall” as the first section in the manuscript; I begin by metaphorically describing depression and anxiety even in the midst of supposed happiness. Additionally, in this section, I take note of the beautiful natural world, complimenting the beauty in the dying.
The second section, “winter”, is the darkest section, which corresponds with the dark nature of the season. While I also account for the beauty in the snow and chills in nature, this section also holds the majority of my trauma with loss, domestic abuse, and PTSD. However, in the third section, “spring”, I start to grow as the flowers bloom and begin the long journey of healing that has been inspired and foreshadowed by the natural elements in my poetry all along.
Lastly, in “summer”, the fourth and final section, I describe in detail the true bliss of motherhood, overcoming hardships, and lasting healing. Nature is a constant muse throughout the book as nature is rejuvenating and healing in and of itself. However, “nature” and “flowers” are also often metaphors in this book for my daughter, Violet, who has been the most healing of all for me. Her name and my eternal appreciation for her appear many times throughout all four seasons.
I also touch on societal pressures and expectations put on women, mothers, single mothers, young mothers, minority women, and the current sociopolitical climate in America. This collection of poetry has been cathartic to write and organize, but it is also a point of pride and ambition for me to share these deep concerning thoughts with others, particularly women, and take part in conversations greater than any of us. It starts with one person, and it is my aim that through reading these words, I can become someone else’s muse, and they will eventually find healing, as I have.
